Evelyn Omeenyo is a Queensland artist, based in Lockhart River. Her work focuses on the traditional history of her territory.

Here, a representation of a fetish animal: the echidna. Echidnas have a robust body covered with a mixture of fur and quills, burrowing limbs, a small mouth with a fine jaw, no teeth but a long sticky tongue with which they catch termites and other arthropods.  Echidnas are unique in that they belong to the monotreme order, meaning they lay eggs.

A totemic animal, symbolizing the connection between human beings and nature, the echidna is often associated with wisdom, protection and resilience.the artist has created a figurative representation, which is relatively rare in traditional aboriginal art.
