The dari is used for ceremonial dances held on occasions such as weddings and tombstone-laying ceremonies.


Its shape symbolizes the Torres Strait, the same shape featured on the flags; it also resembles fish traps (fish enter at high tide, attracted by the bait’s scent, and remain trapped when the tide recedes).

The cut-out shapes on the wood represent kingfishers.
 The colors of the feathers represent the various fish caught with this trap, such as the parrotfish, but they also carry symbolic meaning.
