This coolamon dates from the very end of the 19th century. It is a container used for multiple purposes: harvesting seeds and berries in the desert or transporting water. Some coolamons were also used as cradles or baskets for babies. They were therefore generally associated with traditionally female activities: looking after children and gathering food. Alongside weapons (boomerangs, clubs, spears) associated with male activities, the coolamon was a typical part of a woman's toolkit, along with the digging stick, which was used both for planting and harvesting roots.
