In Quadroon, from The Caste Collection, Konstantina exposes the symbolic violence of colonial racial classifications in Australia, particularly the term “quadroon,” which reduced Aboriginal identity to a fraction of blood. By fragmenting the canvas according to a mathematical logic, she makes visible the absurdity and oppression embedded in these imposed hierarchies. A Blak* Aboriginal artist, activist, and mother, Konstantina transforms this supposedly measurable “one quarter” into a space of resistance, asserting that identity can neither be diluted nor quantified. The work dismantles any binary vision and turns the language of domination into an act of political and visual repair: Blak remains indivisible.

*Blak (without the “c”) is a term deliberately chosen by Aboriginal peoples to affirm their cultural, political, and artistic identity. It distinguishes their identity from the colonial use of the word “black,” reclaims their history and culture, and signals the pride and resistance of their communities.
