This painting takes its name from a species of reed, the Babara. Babara had many uses in Gadigal culture, from weaving baskets and making ropes for fishing nets to creating ornaments. It is also a natural habitat for many sacred Gadigal animals, such as the Garanga (Gadigal word for pelican).
