Originally from northern Queensland, Michael Boiyool Anning’s work is a testament to the vitality of contemporary Aboriginal art that excels at combining tradition and innovation.
By taking as support a fire board, the painter seems to realize above all an object of ethnological order since the design of these boards goes back to the Palaeolithic. But the motifs (here “jump of water in bark”) that he invents or reinterprets by stylizing them make this object a true painted sculpture belonging to contemporary aboriginal art as well as the paintings of the desert or the works of the Land of Arnhem.
