Biography

Yuyuya, sister of the renowned painter Ronnie Tjampitjinpa, began painting with Papunya Tula Artists in 1996. Like her brother, she is a principal custodian of a vast territory encompassing Pirrilyi, Wana Yunta, Watanuma, Tjalingka and Kunyukutu, along with the associated Dreamings: Ngalu, Kapi Tjukuntja, Minma (Women), Mangarri (Bush Food), Wirrinywirrinypa (Fruits), Kampurarrpa (Bush Grapes) and Unala (Banana Root), to name just a few. These sites and Dreamtime narratives lie at the heart of Yuyuya’s work.

Yuyuya Nampitjinpa’s work is distinguished by the use of a complex symbolic language rooted in an ancient cultural tradition. Her skillful handling of colour, movement and negative space gives her interpretations of these symbols a strikingly contemporary quality.
