Gangan, Gapuwiyak Garraparra
Born in Arnhem Land, Nawurapu Wunungmurra is a member of the Yirrkala artistic community in the north-east of this coastal region in northern Australia, famous for the quality of its bark paintings. Nawurapu Wunungmurra is the son of Yangarriny Wunungmurra, who was the first Aboriginal painter to have his copyright recognised by an Australian court. He was a recognised traditional chief who passed on his knowledge to his son over the years. Since his death, Nawurapu has become a respected leader in his own right and travels extensively between communities for ceremonial purposes. He is also an accomplished painter and sculptor, particularly skilled at depicting Mokuy spirits. Nawurapu Wunungmurra is one of Arnhem Land's most eminent Aboriginal artists and is considered the benchmark for Mokuy representation.
