Biography

Ken Djungkidj is the son of the renowned artist Mick Kubarkku (1925–2008), celebrated for his dirdbim paintings (moon, sun and stars) on the lands of the Kulmarru clan. From a young age, he was trained by his father, learning to paint on bark and rock surfaces, mastering both traditional techniques and ancestral narratives.

Today, Ken Djungkidj continues this legacy by depicting Ngalyod (the rainbow serpent), mimih (spirits of the rocky land), yawkyawk (female water spirits), Kubumi (waterholes) and djulng (ancestral bones). His work reflects a deep connection to country and the knowledge of his people, affirming his role as a custodian of Kunwinjku cultural and spiritual heritage.
