Biography

Josephine Wurrkidj is an artist from the Kuninjku community in Arnhem Land, a painter and sculptor specializing in bark painting (dolobbo bim) and sculptures of ancestral spirits such as yawkyawk and mimih, connected to her Kurulk clan.

The daughter of two renowned artists, John Mawurndjul and Kay Lindjuwanga, she grew up immersed in a strong artistic and cultural transmission, mastering traditional Kuninjku techniques.

She works with natural ochres applied with plant fibers on stringybark and also creates lorrkkon (hollow log burial poles). Her work both preserves and renews a tradition deeply rooted in her Country and ancestral narratives.
