Biography

John Baya, born in 1940, is an Aboriginal artist from Ramingining in Arnhem Land (Northern Territory, Australia). He belongs to the rich artistic tradition of northern Australia, a region renowned for the spiritual depth and technical excellence of its creations.

His work is rooted in the continuity of knowledge passed down within his community. John Baya creates bark paintings as well as carved wooden sculptures, which he adorns with clan motifs rendered in natural pigments. These designs, composed according to precise cultural codes, refer to Dreamtime stories, ancestral beings, and the sacred connections linking people to the land and waters of Arnhem Land.
