Jennifer Wurrkidj was born in 1973 in Maningrida, Arnhem Land, Northern Territory, Australia.
Her father, John Mawurndjul, is one of Australia’s most renowned Aboriginal bark painters. He developed a unique style and has become a major figure in contemporary Aboriginal art. He notably contributed to the ornamental project for the Musée of the quai Branly – Jacques Chirac at its inauguration, creating paintings and sculptures integrated into the building’s architecture.
Jennifer Wurrkidj works primarily in bark painting, sculpture, funeral poles (hollow logs), as well as textiles and fabric prints. She draws inspiration from traditional culture, the region’s native plants, ceremonial sites, and ancestral stories connected to her homeland. She is also highly involved in various community projects.
