Australia: defending the oceans. The art of ghostnets

Organisation des Nations Unies, Genève

04 September - 20 September 2017

Since 2009, an artistic movement has emerged in northern Australia. Indigenous artists have been appropriating discarded fishing nets and incorporating them in their artistic creations. The artists chose to make use of the nets as objects of art to help raise public awareness of this new environmental challenge.

The movement has gained wide recognition as evidenced by the acquisition of pieces by major institutions such as the British Museum, the National Gallery of Australia, the Australia Museum, etc.
