Tiffany Ross Nakamarra belongs to one of the best known artistic communities in the central Australian desert, that of Yuendumu where, in the 1970s, contemporary Aboriginal painting appeared at the same time as in Papunya. She represents here the Dream - or Jukurrpa - of the Ancestor of the Yarla (a wild edible potato) which is associated with the site of Cockatoo Creek, located east of Yuendumu.
The legend says that in the Dreamtime - mythical time of the creation of the world for the Aborigines - the Yarla Ancestor and the Wapirti Ancestor (carrot of the bush) clashed near Ngarparapunyu, a sacred marsh. We do not know more about this Dream known only to initiates.
The concentric shapes represent the sacred swamp while the red waves that run across the canvas certainly symbolize the campfires around to hand over the Aborigines still gather today to celebrate this Dream. |
