Susie Peterson offers figurative representations of her Territory. Her paintings are rich in detail and, generally, the different animal and plant species represented are recognisable (spinifex, acacia, etc.). The artist evokes the splendour of the desert at a time when vegetation is developing from which the Aborigines derive part of their subsistence. The style of the Ampilatwatja artists is very different from what is done elsewhere in the Australian desert. Here the painters do not hesitate to use figuration to represent their territory. If the places represented are sacred, no mention is made of the legends linked to them, too secret to be revealed to the uninitiated. In 2019, the artist was awarded from the Barkly Prize, which is given each year to an Aboriginal artist for their work. |
