The Mimih spirits are spirits of the air who live in the caves of the northern coast of the country. They are reputed to have given the Aborigines their laws and customs, but also to have taught them how to cure illnesses, and all the arts (music, dance, painting).
This totem pole is completely covered with ritual and clan motifs (or rarrk) which contribute to the sacredness of the sculpture.
