Ara refers to the ‘boxing waves’ - waves that look as if they are boxing. They are formed behind the reefs at a time of strong currents. This is where safety can be found if a motor fails or if refuge is needed from the strong currents that rip through reefs and islands.

It is also an area where turtles can be found if strong currents are experienced on the reefs. Young boys on their first turtle hunt (Zugngurpa) are told about this by their Uncles who accompany them on their quest referred to as Ara.
