Kubuwai [Halo entourant la lune] 2006

Cette oeuvre explique le lien existant entre la lune et le climat des îles de l’ouest du Détroit de Torres. Un halo blanc autour de la lune par temps calme (Muturu) indique qu’il va pleuvoir quelques jours après. Un halon par grand vent signale qu’il va pleuvoir très bientôt (Ariel Goiga). La couleur de la lune annonce aussi un changement de temps. Dans cette œuvre, comme la lune est très brillante, le temps reste calme.

La grenouille (Katubae) et le cafard (Zirue) reflètent aussi ces changements. Sur l’île de Badu, les grenouilles sont symboles de pluie. Quand le cafard se met à voler en essaims, c’est que le vent doit se lever dans quelques jours ; quand ils se remettent à voler, c’est que le vent doit retomber. Le halo de la lune disparaît alors.

Les symboles entourant le halo blanc sont également gravés sur les pagaies et utilisés dans la cérémonie de la pluie, bien que certains aient donné lieu à une iconographie nouvelle associée au changement de temps. Le bord bleu représente l’océan entourant l’île dans la zone appelée Dgnorr.

Kubuwai [Halo Around the Moon] 2006

This work explains the moon’s connection to weather in the Western Torres Strait islands. A white halo around the moon in calm weather (Muturu) signals there will be rain in a few days time. A halo during heavy wind indicates that rain will fall sooner (Ariel Goiga). The colour of the moon also predicts weather change. In this work, because the moon is at its brightest, the weather remains calm. 

Frog (Katubae) and cockroach (Zirue) also indicate change. On Badu Island, frogs are symbols of rain; and when the cockroach begins to fly in swarms, the wind will pick up in a few days time. When they fly again, the wind is bound to drop, and around this time the moon’s halo will disappear. 

The symbols around the white halo are also engraved onto paddles and used in rain ceremony, although some have been developed into a new iconography associated with weather change. The blue rim reflects the deep ocean around Badu Island in an area called Dgnorr.
