Neitau Dhangal [Chasse au dugong] 2006

« Dans cette sculpture le dugong évoque la forme inversée d’un canoë. Par temps calme, à bord de ces embarcations traditionnelles, on suit les dugongs en pagayant dans un courant faible appelé Guathath Yamaral pour arriver au marais. Aujourd’hui les dinghy en fibre de verre (barques) avancent également à la pagaie, comme le montre cette œuvre ; j’ai inclu les pagaies pour faire référence à la plateforme de chasse au dugong (Nath), qu’on peut voir reconstituée au centre de l’exposition ou encore dans la gravure Sesserae. Par rapport à la chasse à bord de canoë, le Nath est un autre mode de chasse au dugong. L’utilisation de cette plateforme bâtie sur le récif est le mode traditionnel de chasse au dugong ».  (Dennis Nona)

In this sculpture the dugong represents the canoe itself.  In calm weather you paddle after the dugongs in the current called Guathath Yamaral – that hunting is done during the weak current.  You have to paddle the canoe, or the dingy, to the swamp.  The fibreglass dingys also, we paddle those, and that’s based on the  work; and the second reference is to the way I put the paddles on the sculpture, it refers to the Nath (dugong hunting platform), which is depicted in Sesserae and some of my other prints. The platform construction is another way of hunting the dugong.  Nath is the traditional way of hunting dugong, it’s the platform construction built on the reef.
