Saruwai [Nuage de la mort] 2005 Eau-forte, éd.45, 62 x 108 cm Saruwai est un nuage qui se forme comme un champignon au-dessus du sommet d’une île et qui signale un événement sacré. Pour les chasseurs qui se trouvent dans des zones isolées du récif et qui voient ce nuage, ou pour leur famille restée à la maison, cela indique la présence de la mort et invite au respect. Les chasseurs remontent alors dans leurs canoës et repartent chez eux pour préparer une cérémonie funèbre. Le nuage se produit pour les hommes comme pour les femmes, les deux sexes étant ici représentés par des symboles et par les têtes sortant du nuage. C’est tout ce qu’il est permis de dire sur ce nuage. |

Saruwai [Death Cloud] 2005 Eau-forte, éd.45, 62 x 108 cm Saruwai is a cloud that forms like a mushroom over the top of an island, and marks a very sacred occurance. For hunters who are out on isolated parts of the reef who see this cloud over a certain island, and families at home, it is an indication of a death in that place below the cloud and calls for respect. Hunters would then come in on their canoes and head back to their homes to prepare for ceremonial funeral business. The cloud is for both men and women, each represented by the symbols in the print, and the heads coming out of the cloud. This is all that is allowed to be said about that cloud. |
