Awai Yithuyil [Constellation du Pélican] 2004

Awai Yithuyil est le nom donné à la constellation du Pélican dans l’ouest du Détroit de Torres. Ce groupe d’étoiles était connu des astronomes de Badu qu’on appelait Zugubau Mabaigal.

La constellation du Pélican se compose de 26 étoiles. Elle se situe au sud du territoire australien nommé Naigai dagam. On la voit toute l’année, généralement la tête en bas. Elle entre en rotation d’août à octobre et, en septembre, se met droite et semble flotter. Quand le Pélican est debout sur ses pattes, c’est la saison des amours pour les tortues, saison appelée Naigai. C’est aussi la saison où mûrit un fruit très apprécié, le Wangai, appelé Ubar dans la langue de l’ouest du Détroit.

Sur cette gravure, l’Awai Tithuyil est représenté dans la position qu’elle prend lors de la saison des amours des tortues, Saulal au Tonar. Les deux tortues sont accouplées. L’homme qu’on voit au-dessus de la carapace est un esprit, gardien des étoiles, nommé Zugubau Mabaig. Il montre l’Awai Tithuyil à la prochaine génération, symbolisée par les cinq personnages en dessous de lui.

Awai Yithuyil is the western Torres Strait Island name for the Pelican constellation.            This particular group of stars was known to traditional Badu Island astronomers who are called Zugubau Mabaigal.

The Pelican constellation consists of 26 stars. Its location from the Torres Strait Islands is south of the Australian mainland which is known as Naigai dagam.  This constellation is seen throughout the year, mostly in an inverted position. From August through October it begins to rotate reaching an upright position in September where it looks to be floating.  When the Pelican is in the upright position it is the season for turtle mating.  This season is called Naigai. It is also the season for a very popular Torres Strait Island fruit called Wangai, which is known as Ubar in western Torres Strait language.

In this print the Awai Tithuyil is shown in the position it assumes during the turtle mating season which is referred to as Saulal Au Tonar. The two turtles are depicted mating. The man positioned above the turtle’s shell is a spirit figure who is the custodian of the stars known as Zugubau Mabaig.  The Zugubau Mabaig is showing the Awai Tithuyil to the next generation which are represented by the five human figures below him.
